The Music

We were grateful to have the choral ensemble Voices XXI sing at Mom's service, as they had at Dad's three years ago (see the music notes here). Since then, Mom had continued her support of the group both financially and by accompanying them on their trip to Paris, France in 2003, traveling with her niece Anne Sidone. They attended performances in the city of Paris as well as a concert at Chateau Royal d'Amboise, a 15th century estate built on a hill overlooking the Loire Valley. Despite the challenge of negotiating cobblestone streets and long walks up steep hills with her prosthesis, she was thrilled by the trip, and thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the entourage.

Voices XXI dedicated their March 24, 2006 concert at Asbury Methodist Village in Gaithersburg, MD to the memory of Mary G. Dawson. You can read their lovely tribute to her here.

In the program of their Asbury concert, they offered this poem as a part of their dedication:

My Spirit Sang All Day

My spirit sang all day
O my joy.
Nothing my tongue could say,
Only my joy!

My heart an echo caught –
O my joy –
And spake, Tell me thy thought,
Hide not thy joy.

My eyes gan peer around, –
O my joy –
What beauty hast thou found?
Show us thy joy.

My jealous ears grew whist; –
O my joy –
Music from heaven is't,
Sent for our joy?

She also came and heard;
O my joy,
What, said she, is this word?
What is thy joy?

And I replied, O see,
O my joy,
'Tis thee, I cried, 'tis thee:
Thou art my joy.
